The prices are about what I expected. Could be worse. What annoys me a little bit is that in addition to being another lottery for an opportunity to buy, you can only choose one model ahead of time. I would probably buy the 1TB model if I couldn’t get the smaller one. But I don’t think I’m going to volunteer for the large model and give up my chance to buy the cheaper one. Might ask my nephew to put in a 1TB reservation…

From the news I heard, the expected price was around $1,500. I was pleasantly surprised.

Same, this is the best I could’ve hoped for considering the current conditions.

Though it saddens me for how cheap it could’ve been if the world didn’t go crazy. Still spendy, but sub 1k would’ve been really nice

It’s inconvenient but understandable considering how vulnerable Valve hardware is to scalping and money laundering right now.

That explains why they have the lottery, but I don’t understand why they don’t have an “any model” list. They did for the Steam Machine.

Seems the Asia page has no lottery and its just a gauntlet fight vs the scalpers. From what i can gather from what they worded in the queue page when it’s not crashed.

Exactly this, don’t charge me for something I’m literally not gonna use.

These days, USB C is so ubiquitous, I have so many chargers on so many places, I literally do not want or need more.

Other people are different than me, sure, but I can’t imagine I’m in the minority

I’m not saying either of you are wrong, just, actually make sure they’re all 45W or more.

I have tons of cheap chargers that’ll slow-charge a phone, but I had to go out of my way to find ones that would actually power my Deck, for instance. Else it would drain while charging, albeit slightly more gradually, unless I had it completely powered down.

Very true. Most of mine are two or more ports, arranged where the top port is 45 or or 65, the bottom ports are 45 or 30. I color code the cables, red or white for fastest, blue or black for slower.

Heck, my car charger will do 95w between its three ports. Got that thing after we had draining issues while we were both trying to play steam decks while parked for an extended time.

As of today on Linux SteamVR:

        • desktop preview does not work on Wayland DEs
        • dropped frames cause reprojection errors causing visual stutters
        • dropped frames cause “vsync_to_photon” timing errors thus causing input lag/drunken vision
        • exiting any VR game crashes SteamVR Dashboard and sometimes desktop Steam UI too
        • SteamVR sometimes launches legacy UI with missing features
        • SteamVR frequently fails to launch
        • SteamVR does a partial “silent launch” - no desktop confirmation of VR running, but you see image inside of a headset
        • SteamVR can’t automatically switch audio device to headset speakers, nor supports audio mirroring

Issues which don’t apply to Steam Frame but are still technically issues on legacy “Linux supported” headsets:

        • Base Station power management does not work (Vive 1.0/Index 2.0)
        • Room preview/cameras do not work
        • Volume buttons do not work (HTC Vive Pro)

And probably many more issues I’m missing

I don’t think you’re in any position to guarantee that, and people should not spend $1,000+ on a feature that does not yet exist.

Valve is running the first lottery on Sep. 17 and giving selectees 72 hours to purchase. They tend to ship out hardware pretty fast after that. I think I got my Steam Controller within 5 days of purchase.

I find that hard to believe. I’ve been able to stream just fine from Steam to a Quest 2 for months. It’s worked for years if you include using ALVR.

Steam Frame has its own custom streaming hardware and drivers. Other types of VR-streaming working for other VR headsets isn’t necessarily relevant. I’m sure they’ll get it to work soon though, maybe even at launch.

On the Frame itself, yes. On the PC side it’s encoding and sending an audio/video stream and receiving inputs from the VR device over a network. They have implementations for other devices, so it stands to reason that they’d have an implementation for their own device. Maybe there are some kinks to work out (nvidia hardware, Wayland implementation, etc. ), but I’m sceptical that it “doesn’t work”. Especially since game journalism is full of hyperbole.

Then again, maybe I’ll have an expensive paper weight on my desk for a while, but hopefully not! 😆

I don’t know if that’s a definite, vs not being able to stream from a steam machine specifically. You can already stream from linux pcs to other headsets, so I think the limitation is gamemode right now.

An extra note the other user didn’t mention: no official support for 360 treadmills due to the hardware manufacturers not giving a shit. One dude figure out how to get a KAT Walk C2+ working on Bazzite/Nobara though: https://github.com/BBPSBB/katwalk-linux

Honestly not a big deal for most people. But I have a dream of eventually setting one of these up for a heavily modded Skyrim VR

USB 2.0 is sort of disappointing, though realistically, how often will I actually be transferring files to this device?

I guess I can do some testing of this myself right now with my phone, but I’ll ask for anyone who is familiar: should I expect local file transfers over SSH via Wi-Fi to be faster than local file transfers via USB 2.0 anyway?

EDIT: Apparently, you can’t just plug the Frame into a computer and have it show up as a mass storage device. It doesn’t work like plugging a phone into a computer; it works like plugging a computer into a computer. So the best options for local file transfer are probably:

    • SFTP, KDE Connect, Local Send, Syncthing, etc. via Wi-Fi
    • inserting a Micro SD card or USB C flash drive into a computer, transferring files to it, removing it, inserting it into the Frame, transferring the files to the Frame

    Thanks for the heads up!

Tbh, the price is about what I expected as well. Not horribly different from a fully decked out Valve Index when they were new, and theyre including the controllers alongsode the headset this time.

You’d hope it’d have been cheaper due to the lack of external sensors to buy, but inflation and ram/storage prices going up was inevitable. I just hope it’s not DOA from people comparing it to Meta’s (heavily subsidized) options

Maybe just something with federating between sopuli.xyz and pawb.social / midwest.social?

Edit: Both posts show in my app (Boost)

This comment also doesn’t show up on the pawb post yet, so probably midwest <-> pawb federation.
