I mean, we are all here, in a community that as far as I know didn’t exist in a significant way before. Was it a sizeable chunk? we will never know because (a) Reddit needs to cook their numbers to look good to investors and (b) big social networks tend to have a lot of inertia and many people will just stay, I have many friends that are still in twitter because “is a good place to follow good programmers”.

IMHO reddit is the same direction of Facebook, so heading towards irrelevance, but no idea how far, and some people are even still on Facebook, so who knows.

The problem is that there are no real popular alternatives, and not many people want to be somewhere like fediverse, specially losing a significant amount of users. But also for the complexity of the decentralized nature. Coming from someone that tried making jabber a thing for the longest time as opposed to msn messenger: is not gonna happen.

as always there is nuanced to everything, if I see a comedy or horror I’m not going to hold it to the same standards as a drama that is trying to convey a message, there will be a limit if it goes against my values in a crazy way, and I’ll stop watching it, but my main mentality is not there, I don’t watch it from a “defensive” position, so my alarms don’t go off as easily as other people’s, and I assume more good intent by default, which allows me to enjoy more of them, even if they “make fun” of my way of thinking or morals.

Being able to laugh about yourself or your beliefs without thinking you are “helping the other side win” in some kind of imaginary online culture war is quite healthy actually.

Honestly, I love friends, but I would never recommend it to younger audiences.

Humour is a very personal choice, and like colors, not everything being fun for the same people. On top of that, A TON of today’s humour descends from friends, so the jokes feel dated and simple, but they were the literal origin of many tropes, at the time it was perfection, like a chewing gum.

And most importantly, nowadays people (specially chronically online people) can’t just sit back and relax, they are always being judgemental little pricks to feel superior to everyone else, while not even trying to contextualise the time when what they are seeing was made.

Not to mention how sad it is that all the media, no matter the genre, have to pass their stupid moral compass (whether the progressive one or the conservative one). The whole sit back, relax and have a laugh is lost to them.

Is a very sad reality of hyper judgement they lived in, probably fueled by the cancer that is social media. I’m sad for them, they keep chasing the internet points thinking it will make them happy somehow, they don’t just watch something, they keep filling the checklist to then “have something to say”.

I’m so happy the internet was not a thing when I was growing up, what a brain worm I dodged, just in time to enjoy it as an adult as well. I’m really sorry for the young people today.

A couple of thoughts:

Yes, I’ve heard before, even from people living in Japan, that they are quite xenophobic.

Now, why is this not condemned from the west ? (I know Chinese people and they do remember WW2)

As everything several reasons:

Japan has a great propaganda machine to make their culture look cool AF: anime/manga, the mythology around temples, samurais, ninjas…

The good parts of their culture, specially in contrast to the west: the extreme politeness, how clean and organized they are, civility/safety, super good and maintained public services such transport…

The “pretend WW2 didn’t happen”. They were absolute monsters on WW2, way beyond the nazis, but the combination of doing a 180 towards the west and the atomic bombs made it so the west was comfortable with looking the other way while Japan conveniently forgets his war crimes (for anyone unaware search for Nanjing, be warned is a hard read, but is important not to forget)

The “pacifist xenophobia”. When you go to japan their way of practicing xenophobia is quite passive, like, let’s be clear, you are loud and disgusting for them, but they will never tell you that, and you are probably never going to be in danger. At least as a tourist this is 100% like this, they might even just feel introverted rather than xenophobic. From what I’ve heard from people living there, it gets more clear when you live, but didn’t get any “I’m in danger” feeling from them, so I guess that low key discrimination is like that.

Now, not saying any of that makes it good, but I can understand why there is a different level of pushback than to the USA for example, where if you are brown and meet an angry cop or redneck (or both), you might end up dead.

I know for the fucking internet there is no such thing as grey, is either black or white, but I think the world is more nuanced than that.

BTW, for their work culture alone I would never live there, and while I like an anime or two, I’m not an otaku by any means. I did enjoy my vacation on Japan several years ago, but not more than the one on China or other Asian countries.

The dyslexic community: “plaese don’t”

None of “for the children” initiatives do anything good for them, prevents anything or saves any of them. Also, in most cases politicians who actually rape kids are always exempt.

As a rule of thumb, never trust any “for the children”, “for security” or “against terrorism”. It never is about those things, and even if some of the people involved think it is, it gives the ill intended people great weapons against free speech, privacy, healthy democracy… These slogans are always to target people’s irrationality and stop them from actually having logical thinking about the implications. They used them in the past and continue to do so because they work.

The people spreading misinformation will continue to do so because they sooner or later end up in power, and none of these laws will control the government, only the people. Which in itself should trigger you to not trust it.

I hear you, but also, in capitalism everything turns into, at the very least, oligopoly. So, giving that there is no running from it in any aspect of our lives, let us at least celebrate the good things while they last. If we pre-complain, what is even the point of them being good? That idea of “no monopoly/oligopoly” doesn’t exist unfortunately, like, AT ALL, specially in the business of intangible media/goods. The anti valve campaign is fueled by companies that would get all if they win, as all these movements, they claim to protect the mom and pop indie games, but is bullshit. It would be horrible from day 1, because they are already horrible without having the majority of the clients.

I’ve never been big on social media, kinda hate it really, best I can do is a comment a couple of comments a week on lemmi/YouTube, but every time people talk about Tumblr or define it sounds like a place I might have belonged to (even when they define it in a negative way 😂)

I’m assuming this meme doesn’t count the end “glow up” of the character though, which defines the film as a product of its time.

I want to add (without prison sentences… for now) all the push of Europe to do the internet surveillance China style, after we have criticized it so much.

I find this very dystopian, and there are not many “oh I’ll just visit the sites than don’t have it” alternatives. You might as well just open IRC and be done with it, I tend to visit a bit more of the internet (even if I haven’t visited Facebook, Instagram and the likes in years)
