That’s the equivalent of someone with $100,000 donating five bucks.

World News@lemmy.world•Mosquitoes found in Iceland for first time as climate crisis warms countryEnglish
3·7 days agoI doubt it’s the harsh weather that prevents mosquitos. They probably just never made it to the island before and now made it on a plane or boat finally.
In Canada you’ll find hellish mosquitos up in the Arctic circle which has a much colder climates than Iceland I believe.

World News@lemmy.world•Woman fined £150 for pouring coffee down drainEnglish
6·7 days agoSeriously. If you wouldn’t fine them for littering by dumping the coffee on the pavement right beside the drain (which it would washinto on the first rainstorm) then they shouldn’t fine them for anything by dumping it directly into the drain.
No one is going to get fined for dumping coffee on the sidewalk. But they might get fined for dumping oil or paint on the sidewalk.

Games@sh.itjust.works•Should a PvPvE game have to offer a PvE-only mode?English
4·10 days agoI think it would be a nice thing to include as not everyone wants to interact with other players if they don’t need to. But I don’t think it should be an obligation.
It sounds like a concept that I could enjoy, but I probably won’t play it if there isn’t a PvE mode. I play video games so I don’t have to interact with people. But I’m not going to buy it knowing there isn’t a PvE mode and then complain that there isn’t one.

World News@lemmy.world•Denmark plans social media ban for under-15s as Prime Minister warns phones ‘stealing childhood’English
9·21 days agoMaybe instead of banning social media there should be some sort of consensus as to how social media should operate. Get rid of algorithms designed to become addicting or push products harmful to people. Reduce advertisements. Don’t push content that’s from around the world, focus on things immediately connected to someone’s life like posts from friends and family not Rogan and Tate.

101·23 days agoHow much do you wanna bet that any fines for killing the whales will be substantially cheaper than relocation, so the park will do that and just eat the fine rather than risk the province confiscate the whales and then charge them later?

I love winter when it’s a real winter. I think most people who hate winter live in an area where they only get half winters.
When each day is generally -5 to -10 degrees celsius, and you have a constant layer of snow around everywhere for a solid 2-3 months, is when winter is my favourite season of the year
But when you have an average temperature of -1 degrees to 5 degrees, and you get random flurries on snow that melt and freeze constantly, then occasional freezing rain and hail, that’s when winter sucks.
Autumn is better than spring.
Spring has too much melting snow from winter and hasn’t warmed up enough, so it’s always cold and damp.
In autumn the ground is still bone dry from the what of the summer, so even when it rains it just soaks into the ground and you’re good. Then the heat of the summer is still around as it slowly cools into winter, so you still get warm days and cool nights.
Sure, someone just got shot and the crowd is panicking and trying to escape.
Let’s just stand here in the middle of the exit and fill a video, blocking everyone’s way out! Absolutely brilliant.

I really dislike that they keep attributing this to climate change.
Northern Canada has a fuckton of mosquitos, it wasn’t the cold weather keeping them away. Greenland also has mosquitos and it’s north of Iceland.
edit: downvotes why? I literally work in a field directly dealing with mosquitos and have been to the Arctic circle and caught mosquitos to be identified (Culiseta alaskaensis by the way)
I’m not denying climate change is a thing. I just dislike that people attribute this to a warming climate with absolutely no evidence when it is easily countered.
