is omarchy a new distro or new window manager?

I stopped distro hop a while ago, and fixing tiling configs is not worth it anymore for me.

I understand that people are frustrated that the distro is getting more attention than it deserves, but to me, the product itself seems fine (apart from the developer’s politics, but if I never tried or used something made by someone I disagree with, I wouldn’t be using Lemmy). I wanted to try Hyprland, I wanted to see how useful it could be and whether I’d like it. Omarchy had a useful template that had everything important predefined and ready to go. I see a lot of people complaining about the pre-installed bloat, but a lot of it is just web apps and it’s extremely easy to remove any of it. As someone who never used Arch or Hyprland, Omarchy was an extremely useful way to get started and to learn how to use it and customise it without having to spend days figuring out how to even get the basics working.

It’s just my opinion, but omarchy looks like that kid who says they’re VERY hardcore.

It’s not just your opinion, look at the screensavers. Basically very animated 00’s 8-bit demoscene screens that say “OMARCHY” (cannot be changed withour recompilation) over and over.

From what I gather, the only thing they’ve got going for them is that they’re actually contacting key people to try out the distro, as well as timing that campaign to coincide with the EOL of Win10.

But yeah, so annoying to see when there’s so many better alternatives by better people out there.

As for the latter, I haven’t confirmed this myself, but I’ve been hearing that there’s a lot of curling into bash going on, so yeah.

Why are the “better people” not advertising as much now? Don’t people understand that advertising is the key to popularity?

I think they mean using curl to grab something and piping the output to bash so it it executed locally.

And it is pretty common. Things like ohmyzsh use it. I find it scary because you’re running things direct from the web without any package signature architecture. I would trust the omz people but what if their GitHub was compromised? But don’t check any of the source? No. I don’t anyway, but with a bit of fear :/

Even if you check, you should download with curl and check the downloaded file, then run that, as a malicious server could present a normal download to browsers based on user agent and other fingerprinting data, while presenting a malicious script to curl

Wish people would stop suggesting the pipe to bash scripts as an install method but the simplicity of being able to tell all Linux and Mac users to just paste a string into their terminal to install and letting the script deal with any differences between systems is probably why we keep seeing it for major projects, rather than a long list of instructions for different distros

well with the horribly written bash and curl it includes, wouldn’t surprise me at this point.

And that’s all anyone seems to care about. You don’t hear this shit for all the other assholes in FOSS. Only DHH. It’s embarrassing.

Other FOSS people don’t tend to get loads of money from Cloudflare or all this attention for what’s not even that interesting a project.

The Ladybird project is also run by someone who’s said some bad things but it hasn’t exploded in popularity or received 6 figures in corporate donations. Something feels off about this Omarchy hype… like, the product isn’t even that amazing, so the only thing I imagine could explain this difference is that it’s DHH doing it.

Wow, that’s a very thorough review, nice!
I do hope that these companies start to dig one inch deeper at least before providing grants and stuff, it really is a slap in the face of proper distributions (though I feel like the author’s recommendation of Manjaro is misguided 👀), of course at the end of the day they can give money to whoever the hell they want, but if they want to make good publicity, they’d better make sure they get it right

agree on Manjaro. It’s also easy to break in my 6 months experience in 2021. I’m now on Fedora since. Though I think EndeavourOS is a nicer choice for simplified Arch. Or maybe Archlinux itself has gotten easier with archinstall. But I myself have not tinker with distrohopping since I’m on Fedora.

Nice enjoyable little read. Now I kinda know what omarchy is. TL;DR it’s not a distro. It’s a pile of user scripts on Arch, doing things, who knows what.

Bad choices for included software too. I see preinstalled proprietary bloat as a dick move but I could get behind Steam, which is not preinstalled, unlike Discord, Zoom, WhatsApp and Google Drive! Not to mention the AI BS.
