  • Dishwasher safe usually means that the plastic is safe for up to boiling water temperature. You can alter the chemistry of plastics so that you end up with microplastics in your food if you go above certain temps with most plastics.

Dishwashers have different cycles but they also have a “sanitation” cycle often which runs the water at boiling temps to kill bacteria to make it “food grade safe”.

Also the cast iron is there to fuck with the cast iron cult since you’re not supposed to wash them thoroughly but instead keep a small coating of whatever was there that makes it non-stick. You can watch “How to season a cast iron” to get the gist of it.

  • So hating Nickleback become a meme which actually managed to keep the band alive for way longer then other bands in the same category. They still managed to get concerts with great reception for a very long time after their prime with Photograph.

I saw one interview where they said that once the “hate” dies they’ll not know what to do.

I have different but related issues because I wash dishes by hand.

Sink dishes are different levels of dirty. Mixing them is like stabbing me in the dick. Such as a burger frying pan that contaminate tupperware with oil.

Stacking dishes unnecessarily when there’s counter space. It takes less space but the underside of the plates becomes very dirty sometimes and instead of it being “wipe of oily hand stuff” quick wipe it’s a full clean.

Soup pot - > tupperware - > soup pot reheat is a complete waste of time if you don’t need the pot. You should eat the leftovers first anyway. Just shove the whole pot in the fridge.

Eggs contaminate dishes very fast and smell even though they look clean, it’s best to keep them separate until washing and then double wash.

When I’m washing dishes nobody should dare putting stuff in the sink. The sink is my workspace and filling it up will both make dishes below dirtier and make it harder refresh the water on the bottom. Some cases I can keep the sink cleanish by rinsing off initial grime directly onto the grated drain and then it’s just a quick wash to get a clean sink.

There are probably more but those are from the top of my head in the category “making shit dirty for no reason” that feels like a kick in the nuts when people are trying to help but just create more work. A lot of these make no difference when there’s a dishwasher though.

  • Sacrilege. Butter in peanut butter will spoil first so the lifetime will be cut short.

I get your point though, I’d consider “Nut butters” and Tahini to be compatible as well as “Plain yoghurt, Greek yoghurt”. Anything finished in the same sitting is fair game also.

  • This “slap on the wrist” handling of it is way too lenient and can only apply to people who accidentally underpay workers. If you can somehow prove that an employer does it on purpose or rejects a person’s claim for their salary they should be held accountable and be put in the same category as stealing a car with up to 4 years imprisonment.

If you only make employers pay a fine and backpay to whoever requests it might be less than the amount they stole. This way optimal business strategy become “get insured for it and continue”.

  • I’d recommend starting by hosting a nextcloud instance.

    1. Get a desktop computer, pretty much anything will do but having room to add more HDD is important.
    2. Install Linux distro like Ubuntu or something
    3. Get a static IP so your IP doesn’t change
    4. Setup a router port forwarding rule so that an outside address points to your nextcloud instance.

    Then do some optional steps:

    • Automatically turn on PC when power comes back on (BIOS setting)
    • Startup script that runs nextcloud on startup
    • Install docker to manage services like nextcloud
    • Add some remote desktop thingy to manage your server from your laptop (ssh is also good but a steeper learning curve)
    • Get a NAS for storing data with redundancy.
    • Have some other form of backup like your current Google account, cloud provider or one of your mates with a similar setup.

That’s pretty much what you need to start hosting your own files, then later on you can setup a email server, media server like Jellyfin, homepage and everything.

Just go one step at a time and when you hit an issue you can and should ask Google or ChatGPT. Remember, everything exposed to the Internet is vulnerable so take security seriously. Always have everything protected by a decently long password, pairing requirement with your server confirming adding a device or an API key.

  • It depends on the distro. Bazzite might get in the way since it’s a more closed distro if you want to do docker stuff. I personally managed but setting up extra hard drives that docker (podman) uses, but it was tricky. You’ll not have issue browsing the Web or installing most apps though.

Nobara might be a good choice although the user base is not that big so you might have to migrate in a couple of years.

Otherwise I’d stick to regular distros since they have great support and will stick around for a long time such as Fedora or Kubuntu. I’ve also heard Endavour is really good these days.

You should consider choosing a distro based on the Wayland integration since you can get HDR fractional scaling and variable refresh rate with them.

  • Well yeah, but some companies allow employees to choose their OS. Of course FreeCAD is good enough just like Gimp and Blender are good enough to replace Adobe stuff but sometimes people have workflows built around them or even custom scripts that only run on a specific platform.

You make a fair point but the tone might be off-putting for people thinking about switching to Linux. 100% mention FreeCAD as a fully featured CAD software that just works on Linux but we shouldn’t heckle him for wanting Fusion360.
