  • I would recommend moving off of Duolingo if you can. What you move to depends on the language you’re learning. They fired a bunch of their language developers and went hard on AI.

I help run a community for Welsh learners and we’re finding more and more people coming in with questions about a Duolingo lesson where things are wrong and weird. Plus their business practices aren’t great. They realized that they make money from you staying on the app, not learning a language, so your progress is artificial stunted. Plus the complete lack of grammar explanation at all we’re finding hurts people more than helps

As a general recommendation, textbooks are so much better.

I also see Gmail. I don’t have a recommendation for a replacement as I’m doing my research on it now, but getting away from Google is a good idea

  • Talking in just modern times most any technology uses it. It’s used in medicine as nanoparticles for biosensors and cancer treatment (photothermal therapy) as well as targeted medicine delivery. Pretty much all computers have gold wires in them due to it’s conductive properties which sure isn’t necessary for sustaining life technically but modern life, yes. It’s been used in dentistry since like 1000 BC because of how inert it is, it’s used in chemistry all over the place and material science which we rely on to use on all the previous fields. I could go on but I think the point is clear, gold has many many uses beyond just jewelry.

  • To answer the second. Nvidia today announced the $100,000,000,000 investment in OpenAI. On the face of it because AI is coming and this will secure them a larger chunk of the pie.

In reality, it’s probably a grift so OpenAI can go to other investors and say “look, we’re getting so much money, get on board or miss out” and then buy even more Nvidia product with even more investor money to keep the circle going.
