I sorta knew that trans people existed, but didn’t know of hormone replacement (in the '00s Hungarian tabloids only spoke of surgeries when they mentioned trans people 🙄), and since I couldn’t have passed without that, it never crossed my mind that me being trans was an option.

The biggest surprise would definitely be that I’m trans, so I look completely different now than 19-years-old me might have imagined :D

They could apply to join the EU, but it’s very possible that Spain could veto their accession on the basis that they don’t want to give legitimacy to the Catalan independence movement.

From what I’ve read Spain would only veto it if Scotland seceded “illegally”. If the rUK agreed to let Scotland leave, Spain wouldn’t really have a justification for the veto. Iirc their constitution forbids secession, so Catalonia tried to do it “illegally”. (A bit ridiculous to have such a law imho, if there’s popular support for independence.)

I would debate the “most people” part, but I guess we move in different circles. As well as the links posted by toomanypancakes, hundreds of the Guardian’s own staff signed a letter criticising its “pattern of publishing transphobic content”.

It is notorious in the trans community for having some strongly transphobic regular columnists.

If you do an online search for “guardian transphobia” you will find numerous media reports and trans people’s reddit posts about it over the years.

I read the wiki page about the event a few months ago, and it says that most people weren’t in psychosis. They knew they were about to kill themselves, they rehearsed the mass suicide regularly. (Though they never knew before starting if it will be the real thing this time.) Also many were forced on gunpoint, several outright shot when they refused to comply. It was mostly just tragic :(

Yea, I think the first artwork was probably just an ape being amused by the fingerprints left on something by a dirty hand.

As someone periodically into genealogy, I would love to see the everyday life of my ancestors, how their material conditions and lifestyle changed over the centuries.

Occasionally it blows my mind to think about that my ancestors lived through all those historical eras I learned about. They were always there, going about their life somewhere while the large events happened around/elsewhere.

Also on the flip side, when looking at some Roman ruins in Budapest the other day, that those stones really have been there for ~1900 years. Like just imagining medieval/Renaissance people living around them, what did they think of them? I usually think of history as distinct periods, but (at least in Europe) people of most eras lived in/on the works of earlier civilisations.

The Hungarian adjective “ügyes”. It’s used to describe someone when they do something ably/skillfully/cleverly. (Doesn’t necessarily imply a learned ability, can be innate.) It usually implies an activity involving manual dexterity, but can also be used for mental problem-solving.

When used as an exclamation, it basically means “Well done!”

Meglehetősen = rather?

like when used as an adjective “this is rather large”

We have “uzsonna” for this in Hungarian, but it’s mostly just young kids who have this meal :)

The BBC barely feels neutral, has mostly leaned right over the past decade.

The only major left-leaning non-tabloid one I can think of is the Guardian.

The only one I know for sure is The Guardian.

Is there a “not” missing? The Guardian is left leaning except their transphobia.

And yeah, when you give a company license to do whatever they want with your data, “whatever they want” includes AI.

I think an important point is that with the decline of Pinterest’s popularity, most of their data was probably acquired many years before genAI became mainstream. (Like I think I only used it around 2008-2010.) So most users probably never imagined their data could be used for training like this in the future.
