22·26 days agoHere’s how I approach old and slow:
- Older software is mature and battle tested. It’s been around long enough that the developers should know what they’re doing, and have built a strong community for help and support.
- Slow is okay when it comes to accuracy. Would I love to back up my gigabytes (peanuts compared to some of you folks out there with data centers in your attics) in seconds? Yes. But more importantly, I’d rather have my data be valid for if I ever need to do any kind of restore. And I’ve been around the block enough times in my career to see many useless backups.

0·1 month agoBut everybody just wants to sit around and be sad about it instead of actually trying to make a difference.
This makes me a little indignant to read because it shows me that you understand absolutely nothing about declining mental health and how much of an impact it can have on people, their well-being, and their ability to do … things.
If fewer people had your mentality, maybe the sad, depressed, and chronically stressed out people suffering from very real trauma could get the help they so desperately deserve.
Life pro tip: when someone says they are tired, they don’t mean they’re sleepy or lazy. It means they are beaten down so hard that their only sane course of action is to simply stay down, lest they get beaten more.
Here you go!

Michael Vick better start sweating.
Yes, 47% of 47 is certainly much easier to determine when you look at it as 47% of 47! Genius!

0·3 months agoI’ve been a professional programmer for 19 years this year, and I caused 3-hour data loss on one of our major apps just the other week. Shit happens. Humans make errors; even experienced ones. We should strive to learn from it.
As they say:
Biting your tongue while eating is the perfect example of how you can mess up even with decades of experience.
I never will understand how somebody gets into any facet of medicine (e.g. nurse, doctor, pharmacist) and find it okay to deny anybody healthcare solely based on how the person lives. Like dude, there are better ways to make money and be a bigot at the same time. Insurance CEO comes to mind. Cannon fodder as well.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Linus Torvalds muses about maintainer gray hairs and the next 'King of Linux'English
0·1 year agoPeople need to chill with the language fanaticism. It’s one thing to make jokes and rip on a language for its quirks, but at the end of the day it’s just a language. If you truly don’t like it, don’t use it. I’m going to take a stab and guess that there is enough Linux kernel source to go around to both the c devs and rust devs. Just be glad they’re not trying to rewrite it in JavaScript. 😉
I feel it’s equally important to point ot that Torvalds recognized his toxic behavior, apologized for it, and took steps to rectify it.
In an email to the Linux Kernel Mailing List, which also addresses the kernel update of Linux 4.19-rc4, Torvalds writes: “I need to change some of my behavior, and I want to apologize to the people that my personal behavior hurt and possibly drove away from kernel development entirely.”
“I am going to take time off and get some assistance on how to understand people’s emotions and respond appropriately.”

If I were the prof, I’d own it and every class there after I would have “Professor whats his n*ts” (because somebody would get offended) on the board. I wouldn’t call the student out at all. And I wouldn’t say anything about it.
