  • It isn’t a magic solution, no, but you have a lot more control than crummy layer 3 firewall rules and endless lists.

The big players have far more data about what bad looks like. Either we can play whack a mole with outdated tools and techniques or get smart and learn to use what is available.

Self hosting doesn’t mean we go backward in terms of the sophistication and difficulty, it means embracing modern solutions.

In the dinosaur days, we had primitive tools, but so did the attackers. We cannot hope to self host with any measure of security if we bring piss to a shitfight.

  • Get a WAF. Sophos firewall is free if you want to diy. If not, use cloudflare.

Opening ports, logging, monitoring, nailing up allow listed IP addresses and dicking around with fail2ban is such a timesuck. None of that crap will stop something from exploiting a vulnerability.

Some things are worth farming out to a 3rd party. Plus, you can just point your DNS entry over and be mostly done. No more dynamic IP bs.

  • Seriously, I was em dashing on a goddamn typewriter, the fuck am I gonna change it now.

In the end, it won’t matter. Being able to write well will be like riding a horse, calligraphy or tuning a carburetor. They will all become hobbies, a quirky past time of rich people or niche enthusiasts with limited real-world use.

Maybe it is for the best. Most people can’t write for shit (does not help that we often use our goddamn thumbs to do most of it) and we spend countless hours in school trying to get kids to learn.

Science fiction has us just projecting our thoughts to other without the clumsiness of language as the medium. Maybe this is just the first step.

  • Well there is something you can do right now. If something else goes wrong, make him help you fix it.

I torture my sons by making them help me as I currently finish up a transmission on their car. One of them made a hole in the wall and I will show them how to make the patch, but they’re sanding it.

They have all been shown how to sweat copper, plunge a toilet and cable a drain.

It is odd that your dad knows how to do to do all this stuff, but doesn’t teach you. When I’m old and crusty, the last thing I want to do is fix everyone’s stuff. He’s just setting himself up for a lot of work in his golden years if he doesn’t.

  • I’m pretty happy with how I’m adulting. I cook a bunch, I fix just about anything, I am a pretty solid home DIY person, good with plumbing, electrical, cromulent at basic carpentry and drywalling.

My money is OK, could be better, most of my relationships are healthy, I’m doing OK physically.

I read a lot of books, prioritized emotional health and growth, I like a lot of things, I’m pretty bad at the piano, but I try real hard.

I don’t know if I’m pro max but a lot of my friends ask for my advice.

Also, what is that strange curly cord in the picture.

  • Dear brother/sister rest your mind. You cannot control what will happen and worry/fear will only agitate you.

I don’t like the idea of life being over, but it is inevitable. Seek acceptance and peace with this so you do not waste your precious hours with unnecessary discomfort. There is so much more to enjoy while we are still here!

Loss of life is followed by mourning - except when it is our own. Some spend decades mourning the end of their lives because they are scared of facing it down. You’ve done the big scary part already. Now spend the time taking yourself through all of your fears. Once you come to acceptance it doesn’t change what will be, but it will trouble you a lot less.
