  • Windows IoT can have compatibility issues with software because they’re not the latest version of Windows (think Debian vs. Arch, but without Debian being the presumed default). Also you can’t get a license for it legally.

This is all stuff I’ve heard second-hand, but it turned me off Windows IoT. So now I main Linux and have Windows 10 on my old Laptop (AND FFS WINDOWS STOP CHANGING MY FIREWALL SETTINGS).

  • You can still use Windows 10 connected to the internet. Same safety precautions apply whether you’re on Linux or Windows 10.

    1. Don’t run executables from the internet unless you trust them. Be extra cautious with Windows 10.
    2. Close all the open inbound ports in Windows Firewall (you don’t need them for anything anyway).
    3. Close them all again because FFS WINDOWS I CLOSED THEM FOR A REASON SO STOP OPENING THEM.
    4. Use a browser that’s still getting security updates, so if you’re on Microsoft Edge for some reason then … nevermind if you’re still on Microsoft Edge in 2025 then there’s no saving you.
    5. Keep physical access restricted. I gave up trying to configure bitlocker but if you can set it up then that’ll better resolve this.
    6. Keep an eye out for news of critical vulnerabilities, particularly ones that score high in terms of “Base Metrics”.

I’ve also put in a firewall rule that prevents Microsoft Edge from accessing the internet entirely, but that’s more out of spite than security. Windows keeps overriding my Firewall settings anyway so I don’t think it’ll have much of an effect.

  • Gonna install CachyOS tomorrow.

    I know I’m late but …

    spoiler

It took me a while to backup all my game saves and memes from Windows 10 because Proton Drive limits you to 2GB unless you pay and if you don’t pay your subscription they delete your email address. Could’ve gone with another provider but I was due for a spring cleaning anyway.

I was also trying to get through my Itch library to save me the hassle of figuring out how to work Lutris but then the Steam Next Fest came and I gave up on clearing my backlog since I have a hard deadline of the next Steam Hardware Survey.

  • I’m gonna comment on my personal experience with a few search engines.

    • Startpage I stopped using because, and it took me a while to notice this, the searches aren’t included in the URL. This means if I want to bookmark a startpage search for later or find a startpage search in my browser history I can’t. This is a dealbreaker for me.
    • Qwant didn’t have advanced search tools of any kind, and it also didn’t work in Singapore (where I occasionally set my VPN to).
    • Mojeek … is not ready yet.
    • Kagi I tried for a bit but I’m not paying a subscription to an American company for search.

Ultimately I ended back up on Duckduckgo Startpage. I think perhaps we should go back to web directories instead of search engines.
