Yes. But like @18107@aussie.zone said, Windows has a bad tendency to overwrite the bootloader, and that can happen down the road during an update of theirs.
That’s why people recommend using a separate physical drive to install linux on if dualbooting with windows, because then you choose what you want to boot up on with the UEFI boot menu instead which Windows can’t overwrite (yet?).

1·5 days agoEh. There’s also a bunch of bozos there that’ll literally rip 128 kbps mp3s from youtube and store them as FLACs. I saw it with my own 2 beady eyes right after the release of “The end of you” by Poppy, Amy Lee and Courtney LaPlante. So there’s no way of knowing what source they’ve used.
EDIT: I do like Soulseek a lot tho!
Thanks for sharing your thought process going through this. Theming is important, perhaps more important than we think of regularly, it’s actually one of the main things I enjoy about linux. I believe it’s also a reason why people are leaving Windows as it has become way too corporate and soulless.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Is there a simple GUI application alerting the user when a process is not running?
1·7 days agoThey do mention a plasmoid for KDE plasma, although according to their documentation that requires distro specific packaging. For Debian it looks like there’s a community package (right side).
EDIT:Doesn't look too busy imo.

9·7 days agoBy systems service you’re talking about systemd, right? I found this guide that sets up syncthing as a systemd service. Archwiki has a different one though.
And as the Archwiki alludes to, there’s this Syncthingtray tool that can be set up to show notifications.

23·11 days agoOof. Luckily it seems to only be DNS blocks for now.
Yeah, unfortunately there’s no inverse mouse cursor theme. I loved it on windows as well. What I’m using now is this “Hackneyed high contrast cursors” theme, the green one to be specific, and I absolutely love it.
Example.

I don’t actually know, but I assume mouse themes are universal? Or does KDE mouse themes now work with Cinnamon?
In KDE Plasma there's also a setting where you can shake your cursor to make it bigger, although I don't feel like I need it.
I read that there’s an extension for Cinnamon that does the same, although I also saw a bug report that it might be broken, idk. Worth a shot. Here’s how to enable it.
For the cookies, Consent-o-matic could help with that. It doesn’t work on all pages, but it speeds things up.

7·17 days agoIt comes as no surprise that the flatpak version of freetube doesn’t like using an external player. I tried giving access to /usr/bin via flatseal, but alas.
Installing the real version it works though, but seemingly Fedora’s current version of yt-dlp doesn’t seem to cut it anymore. There is a newer version on yt-dlp’s github though, so getting that and overwriting the installed version in/usr/bin(don’t forget to make a backup, otherwise there’ssudo dnf reinstall yt-dlp) that does the trick. The sponsorblock plugin is an excellent shout though, I hadn’t heard of that for MPV, then again, it’s rare for me to stream directly from youtube.
But wait, doesn’t yt-dlp already have sponsorblock support? I guess it’s better to get the whole stream and then do player based sponsorblock stuff.

3·19 days agoYeah, I really shot myself in the foot when I originally went with Authy. I remember looking around for an alternative to Google Authenticator back in ~2014 when I got my first smartphone, and Authy was recommended at the time. Had I been more worried about FOSS back then I might’ve picked a better solution.

2·19 days agoThanks, that’s actually great to hear. Otherwise I could’ve spent weeks looking into the differences. Surprisingly crDroid is offering a version based on Android 16 for my device, they seem ahead of the curve.

2·19 days agoThanks for the suggestions. I’m on an older phone, Samsung A52 5G so there’s not a lot of options. Of the ones you mentioned I checked and crDroid was the only one that supported it for sure.

2·20 days agoYeah, that’s what I’m thinking as well. I just like /e/OS defaults better. But having tried LineageOS via Waydroid I think I’ll be fine using that. I can probably harden it manually if needed.

3·20 days agoI spent the whole weekend going through every possible step. I installed Android-x86, I installed Android Studio, I installed Waydroid. Authy will not run on a rooted device.
I downloaded the Snap version of Authy Desktop v. 2.2.3, but alas, they’ve closed all the loopholes. It’s always a pain to move 2FA keys to a new app.
Yeah. Sucks. But I’ve been registrering all new 2FA keys in both Authy and KeePassXC since I moved to Linux, so hopefully it’s not as bad as I think it’ll be, at least I’ll have KeePassXC TOTP setup for maybe >20% of my accounts.

4·20 days agoI honestly don’t use my phone much either, it’s as you say, mostly for text based messages.
Luckily I don't get spam calls because in my country we have pretty good privacy laws still:
like my number is set to private and I’m on the “Robinson” list, and if someone calls that’s not in my contacts list I don’t pick up. Cold calls is how they get ya, and once they know there’s someone picking up, it’s like sharks smelling blood.
The app I use the most, besides my banking app (which I’ve confirmed works in waydroid aka LineageOS), is probably the Lidl app 😂.
I do still use Google Pay quite a bit, but I’m fine going back to card. I don’t even know if NFC works in LineageOS or /e/OS.
And like you said, as long as the phone can do some GPS stuff for navigation, that’s mostly all I need. And browse the internet (IronFox) every now and then.

14·20 days agoYeah, I’m fixing to move to either /e/OS or LineageOS. I’m leaning /e/OS, but I’m worried it’s less supported than LineageOS for a newbie like myself. On a side note, I also need to go through all my Authy 2FA keys and refresh them because Authy is too locked down to work on anything but a “real” android phone. That’s going to be another PITA.

It won’t affect linux itself, you can restore the bootloader and get into linux when windows does that, it’s just that it’s a pain in the arse to restore. But yes, it has happened not too long ago that windows overwrote the linux bootloader. Microsoft obviously claimed it was an accident, but they obviously don’t care.
And no, on a separate drive windows won’t touch it at all.
EDIT: Maybe it’s not so hard to restore grub loader as I thought, could be as simple as these steps.
