United Kingdom@feddit.uk•Palestine Action protest: police begin making arrests at London demoEnglish
1·22 days agoIt is easy to be against atrocities in the aftermath, when there is no cost. Most of the time, the weight of “allowed” political opinion, and quite a lot of real public opinion, is at the very least tacitly accepting. If it was otherwise someone would have put a stop to them.
That’s one of the bright spots is that public opinion about Palestine is radically shifting, in a way that will make it hard for Israel to sustain any of this for too much longer I think. Of course that’s of no value to any Gazans who are already dead or about to die, waiting for “progress.”

World News@lemmy.world•BREAKING: Israeli authorities have beaten Greta Thunberg, made her kiss Zionist flagEnglish
9·23 days agoI wasn’t really thinking of them as part of “the Western world” tbh. I do understand that there’s a loud contingent for whom she’s just a stupid loudmouth FEMALE, maybe that is a fly in the ointment of my argument. I do think it’ll still have a pretty significant impact.

44·23 days agoI actually don’t think that’s true. One of the rare bright spots in Trump’s generally unbroken record of catastrophe is that he is so unpredictable, and generally gives so little of a shit what happens to anyone outside himself, that the chances of Israel suffering some kind of great consequence and the US not bailing them out as we always do are greatly increased right now I think.
Also, yes, I think this is possibly the greatest fuckup Israel could possibly have committed right now. It may be what finally turns the tide against them, after so many decades of nothing. Outside of literally nuking Gaza or Iran or something, I honestly can’t think of anything worse for them than physically brutalizing a universally popular Western media personality for literally no reason at all.

UK Politics@feddit.uk•BBC caught rigging Question Time to bar pro-Palestine audience membersEnglish
82·24 days agoYeah. I am constantly on the lookout for American-style “let’s all stop voting for the Democrats, that will help” solutions which keep suspiciously cropping up in the media. And that was definitely one of them. I thought the whole story was relevant enough that it was worth posting regardless, but that part was bullshit.

- The two genders of video game protagonists: Male and political
- The two types of political TV programs: Pro-Israel and “political” (NEW!)
Like with a lot of Orwellian terminology, it gets absorbed to the point that the person who’s saying it doesn’t even grasp that there’s anything weird about the way they are using the language. That’s why it functions so well – the framing is just the only framing a person could have.
To whoever made this statement, “too political” in this context makes perfect sense, it doesn’t even occur to them that it will give the game away and they need to use a different code-word framing right now.

Games@sh.itjust.works•Were you disappointed when Perfect Dark got canceled?English
9·27 days agoPerfect Dark was one of the best N64 games, it is criminal that it wasn’t more well known. It is an incredibly rare sequel that builds on the original in significant ways without doing anything to muck up the existing successful formula… and Goldeneye as a starting point was already one of the best games of that era.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•In the long ago past, people needed to do THISEnglish
0·30 days agoHaha yep. The whole family was involved. I don’t even think it’s necessarily a bad thing, it’s definitely not comfortable but as long as you don’t have bad intent, it’s probably better that everyone has some kind of tabs on what’s going on, and you have to face up to justifying to them why and how you’re hanging out with their daughter.

“Liberals?”
“See they put this coolant in that will make your daughter gay, we used to have good coolant in this country but I just don’t understand how people in this country don’t GIVE A FUCK and I said Charlie Kirk stood up and said what was right, and what happened to him? WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM? Where’s your daughter, I need to talk with her.”

Science Fiction@lemmy.world•[DAMO] The most hated science fiction writer (It's not Heinlein, Hubbard, OR Andy Weir)English
0·3 months agoHm… according to this article, it’s the opposite. He started out as a Hippie and then married a Republican and everything went to shit.
I hadn’t know that much of the history (that link’s article links to an even more in depth article), but that’s what it says. I think the truth is probably a little more complicated; as you noted his most hippie-ish books came out after this thing says he was already a fascist. I think a certain amount of it is that he didn’t really have a single consistent ideology (and felt very differently about personal liberty as he did about governmental structure.)

Science Fiction@lemmy.world•[DAMO] The most hated science fiction writer (It's not Heinlein, Hubbard, OR Andy Weir)English
0·3 months agoHelinlein stayed in the navy long enough to pick up all their authoritarian traditions and buy into them full throatedly, but not long enough to go into combat and see them all falling apart and gain some wisdom about it.
He is fine and he wrote some gems but his political viewpoint is a bunch of poo poo.
Edit: Also, WTF, I am listening and who has a problem with Andy Weir?

She was pretty emotional at times. She only really smiled the once. You can see that it fucked her up a little bit, she’s just got enough fire not to let it bother her on camera and mostly get on with what she feels like needs to be said. That is my read of it at least, from my uninformed perspective.
