You’re assuming they don’t control something in the room with the light, or they could control the lights in your room and the light you’re trying to check .

That is pretty obviously the tough outer layer of an onion, not plastic. They didn’t take off enough layers of the onion. No one is going to wrap onions in plastic because that would actually make them spoil faster.
