  • To what extent? Like what about an AI generated humour/satire image in a comment section? I have a funny one of Vladimir Putin sitting on a naughty step

That’s a no for that. It’s ultimately based on someone else’s stolen work.

We would, I suspect, allow AI imagery in discussion about AI and what it us capable of but the days of posting it to laugh at the shitty results seems long gone. In recent examples, I couldn’t tell by eye but I ran it through an AI checker which was pretty definitive.

Anyway, I changed casualuk icon as it was an old 2023 AI generated image previously. I think we should work towards revamping other communities

Yeah, there’s the odd community avatar we need to swap and we definitely need to give some of the communities a bit of a revamp as they were bodged together over a year ago, often in haste.

  • Which tools specifically?

    Standard Web forum tools include:

    • Editing posts - the main issue is misleading titles
    • Moving posts to different communities
    • Merging posts
    • Splitting comments into separate posts
    • IP check

This post makes some good points about reports federating (being worked on, I believe) but also about the lack of what we’ll call a “moderation panel” where you can access tools for the community, like seeing a list of banned users and being able to add to it there or unban someone.

There are other “nice to have” tools like post approval

I am curious to see what moderation tools PieFed, has and NodeBB now they are federated, but the documentation is skimpy on that front.

  • You’re a cunt. Happy?

Are we suggesting defederating everyone on lemmy.ml?

I don’t think anyone is suggesting anything, yet.

Personally, In see no need to defederate as their actions aren’t having an impact on this instance. We usually defederate on the grounds of noncery and occasionally when an instance is full of toxic trolls (or temporarily if they are having technical problems that impact our server). I’d just suggest monitoring the situation for now.

And on the issue of popular communities being on there: it’s the Fediverse, find a relevant instance or a general one (preferably not lemmy.world - we need to spread the love/load) and start a new one.

Today’s lesson: don’t talk Politics on tankie instances.

Having said that, I do also think we should stop calling them tankies as a pergorative. If we are complaining that they don’t have basic respect for their users then we should probably set an example and not stoop to name calling.

I refer you to my first sentence.

  • Pretty much this ^^^^

If we build it, they will come but we all need to help build it:

    • If you think there’s a need for a community then start it - you can always pass on the reins later on.
    • If you see something interesting then post, don’t wait for someone else to do it - numbers are still relatively low so there isn’t usually the scramble to post something there might be on Reddit.
    • If you have an account on another instance then subscribe to communities on here - it improves discoverability and drags the content over to that instance. I had to ask if a specific but niche community existed because search wasn’t showing it and it did exist, I just had to use the URL to drag it over here. So this is key.

If you see an opportunity to mention a community, them throw a link in.

If you start a new community post it here: !newcommunities@lemmy.world as it announces it to the wider Lemmiverse and should get subscribers from elsewhere.

There are various community directories that I list here, if a Feddit.uk community meets the criteria for inclusion (some are focused on Reddit equivalents to help migration) then add it. Again, don’t wait for someone else to do it as they might not.

On Atlas of the Fediverse I run self-promotion Sunday, so anyone can throw links in there old or new.
