If only the Prime Minister who used to be a fucking human rights lawyer was able to explain why jailing people without a jury trial is a bad thing.

That’s essentially what I do. I’m an old user and was running arch before it had archinstall so I’m fully capable of doing a manual install, but I also don’t have a particularly unusual computer setup so the script is like 95% fine for what I need. I do a few post-install tweaks but that’s pretty much it.

You can also offline the whole of Project Gutenberg with Kiwix, it’s about 70GB IIRC.
I just don’t see the point of them when there are flatpaks. I’m not super knowledgeable on Snaps so maybe there’s some huge benefit I don’t know about, but they always just seemed like a worse version of flatpak to me.
As an old-timey Linux user, I eventually stopped using Ubuntu because they have a habit of kind of fixating on whatever they think is the new cool thing, and going all-in on it while other important things stagnate, then they get it to the point where it’s almost really good, then ditch it and go chasing after the next shiny thing.
Off the top of my head there was the Unity desktop, Mir, This thing where they wanted an OS that would run on both desktops and phones interchangeably, and now it’s Snaps. I don’t think Ubuntu is a bad distro, but I also don’t think it’s the best distro for newcomers necessarily because of it’s habit of suddenly lurching off in a new direction every few years. But that’s just me of course, if it works for you then go for it!

I clicked on it out of curiosity and it just went to a page saying it was invite only and then asked for my email so I just closed the tab lol.

I need to use it to look stuff up once in a while, but I try to avoid it whenever possible because of the ridiculous amount of fucking about it takes just to make that site usable. It used to need reddit enhancement suite, then they brought in the new reddit so then it was RES and a thing to force it to use old reddit, now they’re blocking VPNs and most of the old apps so now if I have to go there I try to just use a random Redlib instance.

Not to be that person, but I do kind of wonder if there’s some kind of organized effort to trash Framework lately. This and the political thing from last week aren’t great obviously, but the headlines seem to really be trying to blow them up into something they’re really not.

If you want to check specific games you can use ProtonDB to find out how well they run/any specific tweaks to get them working.

Yeah I have two Linux machines, the laptop which is my tinkering machine and the desktop that other people use that I’m not allowed to break, and I run Kinoite on that one because it’s pretty hard to do anything to mess it up. At least I haven’t managed it so far lol.

My first thought was they’ll probably use it to generate endless slop assets for The Sims, since people seem to pick up whatever they put out for that.

Just sitting here playing the long game, waiting for EA to finally implode and get sold off for parts so we can finally get a new Command & Conquer.

Yeah we’re nowhere fucking close yet. 10 years from now you’ll step out of your front door and be knocked over by someone on an e-scooter with a Hitler moustache and a bluetooth speaker playing high-pitched white noise for no particular reason, then get fined because the e-scooter companies bought the sidewalks and renamed them scootwalks and it’s illegal to walk on them now and you’ll look back at today as some kind of enlightened wonderland.
Then it’ll keep getting worse.
The only thing that concerns me about that is the current surge that seems to be behind Reform. I definitely agree that Labour is decaying from the inside and needs serious reform if it’s even salvageable at all, but my worry is that the people who stop supporting Labour will fracture off into a bunch of smaller groups, all the grifters will glom onto Reform and we’ll end up with Farage as PM for a decade or more while the left sorts itself out.
It’s such a left wing thing to have the vote split 2 ways between Labour and Lib Dem for years, and then as soon as the right wing splits itself in two, the left immediately splits three ways lol.
(NB: I’m using ‘Left’ very broadly, in the sense of being left of the Tories.)

Mine says ‘Code’ for some reason.

I’ve done that before too! Last year I was having a very specific issue and I was googling it, found someone who had the exact problem I had like 5 years ago, and it turned out to be me from my old account back when I used to use reddit lol.

Yeah when you’re in the middle you kind of know enough to be able to get around the safeguards and properly break things, but not always how to fix them again necessarily.

Ah but that’s not how being a gamer works. When the game companies do something sleazy you have to:
Complain about it endlessly online
Buy the game anyway and play it for 500 hours, stopping occasionally to post online about how terrible it is
Buy all the DLC, complain about it being a ripoff and then leave a negative Steam review
Then start saving for the sequel, which will be nowhere near as good as the first game.
I like filen too. I don’t know if they still do it but you used to be able to buy lifetime plans and stack them, so I picked up 300Gb of storage without a recurring subscription by just buying a plan every time there was a sale/Black Friday thing.
