I honestly wish we used metric in the US.

What always cracks me up, are people not from the US who whine about our units, and demand that they be translated into their comfort units, which doesn’t make them look smart, it makes them look like they can’t do math as well as a teenager in the US.

I had a phone that translated voice messages to text but it didn’t email them, I think it was a Samsung note 20.

Nuclear power is really cool, but my biggest problem with building new reactors isn’t even the money issues you pointed out, it’s the fact that I live in the US and I don’t trust any regulatory agency to build a new nuclear power plant correctly/safely.

Solar panels and wind turbines are monumentally cheaper AND they don’t potentially cause ten thousand year contamination problems.

Yes I know all of that, I’m saying that solar is so much cheaper than coal power that even private individuals can buy it, so we shouldn’t be wasting money on new coal plants or gas plants.

I used to do utility locates around a couple of golf courses that were surrounded by homes. The homes and the golf course were made at more or less the same time. For the most part they were set up so that balls were not flying toward houses.

I once had to mark some lines that were ON the golf course, and a couple of idiots were saying they would hit a ball at me since I was marking the grass. I told them the first time a ball flies near me I’m coming back with a dirt bike.

There exist pretty chickens, though.

Solar is so cheap now, that some people can just build their own solar and battery setup themselves.

Use your superior education that you got in your non-US country and do the math. Yeah the units are stupid and Americans are uneducated. But we can at least do the conversions.

I’ve had it at least a year now, the only sort-of issue I have with my phone is that it can’t use 5G. They make other models that do use 5G.

Here’s one of my favorites. I used to work in a metal fabrication shop running a specialized piece of equipment. Another person was hired to run the same machine on another shift. I had to come in several times when I was supposed to be not working, just to help this new guy run the machine or fix some problem it was having. I come to find out, our nearly helpless new guy is being paid more than I am.

I took a day off, ignored my phone, and pursued a couple of opportunities. I got lucky and was hired as a draftsman. The next day at work, I gave a two week notice, to great gnashing of teeth. Day two of the two week notice, they decided to just let me go.

So I hit the e-stop, which shut the machine down, requiring a half-hour of time to re-start, and causing the loss of the part it was working on. My now former boss asked what I was working on, and I said “I don’t work here sir. I don’t know what any of this does. I’ll get out of your way.”

I deleted all of my notes. Pages of information I used to run the machine and how to solve various issues. How to set it up. How to take care of it. It was on my phone, because they wouldn’t spring for a notebook and certainly wouldn’t let me use a computer to make nice organized documentation. All of it, gone. New guy gets frustrated and quits a week later.

And now instead of moving heavy things around all day, I sit in a climate-controlled office (in a building I designed) and draw pictures, and some days I fly a drone and take pictures.

My phone is a Fossibot F106. It’s a rugged smartphone. It weighs 456 grams, it’s about 25 mm thick. I charge it twice a week and it’s made me so spoiled.

There are a few different ruggedized smartphones on the the market. They are worth checking out.

But they use Grindr to make sure they aren’t gay. Just have to make sure periodically. Like once a week.

I’ve had a K1 for a couple of years now, and I’ve never had issues getting parts for it. I recently replaced the hot end and hot end breakout board because of my own personal stupidity, and I was able to just buy the parts. And they fit.
