Think about this, since Thatcher first got into power, Britain hasn’t had one good prime minister.
I’ll reserve judgement on Andy Burnham, but I honestly think the least bad prime minister we’ve had since Thatcher is John Major.
He had a working class background, worked as both a bus conductor and labourer before moving into banking and then politics. He was very pro-Europe, and didn’t subscribe to popularity politics. The main complaint people had about him was that he was uninteresting.
I do think Tony Blair is the worst PM since Thatcher, just in terms of lasting damage. BoJo and Liz Truss were worse at the job, but the damage they did was fixable. We’re still living with the damage done by Blair - the Overton Window has still not shifted back, student loans, the normalisation of lying in Parliament. The country, the institutions and youth prospects are all worse as a result of him. And seemingly not content, his haunted mummified corpse has now shuffled back on the scene to try to do more damage.
Don’t forget the destruction of mainstream left wing politics, through the alteration of clause IV in Labour’s constitution!
It’s taken 2 decades for socialism to gain any mainstream support in UK politics since (in Polanski’s Greens). Corbyn tried but the Blairites saw to that.
