Kinda annoying that our nuclear weapons are partly controlled by the USA and it’s probably not possible to use them against the USA 😬

Well, it is. Sort of. We know this because periodically the navy takes a trident without a warhead and fires it from a submarine. One recent test was a partial success. The RN components all worked. Unfortunately the Lockheed guidance system failed and the missile turned around and headed for Florida.

They are made in the USA so it’s going to be hard to go of them cold turkey. But next time the contract swings around we need to look at the french model.

The nuclear warheads are actually made in Berkshire. The ‘delivery systems’ i.e missiles they are mounted on and the surrounding tech often comes from the states and gets sent back there for refurbishment and testing every few years. The UK could do a lot of damage with what it already has in stock before needing to get more. I agree that the US should be cut out of all important supply chains though.

Reliance on the US is clearly unsustainable, but how quickly we can actually disentangle ourselves is a difficult question to answer. If I were a NATO power I’d be quietly trying to fully reverse-engineer any US tech we can’t get from elsewhere so that I could start replacing it, to make that transition less painful.

The problem is that such a transition is going to be very expensive, for little tangible benefit. You can’t tell when your military deterred a foreign power from invading simply by being sufficiently scary. But maintaining that power and independence from US influence on policy is paramount. Trump wants to do exactly what Putin is doing in Ukraine (and already did in Georgia and elsewhere): dominate smaller countries, dictate their policies to them, and if they don’t kowtow, punish them.

So leave NATO, get rid of our nuclear deterrent and put up taxes without worrying if they will raise revenue?

There are definitely problems with the current arrangements but it seems his policy is to make us weaker and poorer.

I’m surprised to see someone from Lemmy.ml suggesting that the UK should keep its nuclear weapons, and stay in NATO. I thought Lemmy.ml was mostly far-left, anti-NATO, and anti-nukes.

I also have ML account. Also pro-deterrent as that is the world we live in right now. Not exactly pro-Nato, but in favour of some EU related defence pact as the threat from Russia cannot be ignored.

ML is far more diverse than you assume.

I didn’t realise my choice of Lemmy server dictated my political views. I only chose it because I’m a FLOSS developer and joining the main development server meant I might be able to help in the future.

I’m not pro-nuke but I’m certainly pro deterrent when others have nukes. NATO has successfully kept the peace in Europe for 80 years. I’m certainly not far left - I would describe myself as a radical centrist.

Fair enough, maybe Lemmy.ml has more variety than I thought. Yes I think it makes sense for the UK to keep nukes as a deterrent. NATO has been good, but whether it will survive Trump’s presidency, who knows.

          radical

          centrist

This doesn’t make any sense to me… What does that mean? Or is it just a play on moderate centrists name?

FYI .ml stands for Marxist Leninist. It’s a tankie communist server, although as you said it’s also the developers’ server so I can understand being on it without proscribing to their political views

It means I don’t subscribe to abolishing capitalism or unfettered libertarian free market at the solution to our problems. At the same time I think we can be more radical in reshaping public policy. For example in the UK context I would abolish NI and instead of banding taxes with it’s cliff edge effects apply a progressively incrementing tax rate so it becomes a simple percentage based on how much you earn.

Anyway this thread isn’t about my views so maybe we should save radical policy discussions for another post 😀

I’m not long awake from a nap and thought you wanted to abolish Northern Ireland at first 🙈

I dunno if I’d call tweaks to the tax system, but otherwise generally keep the system we have already, as radical… But aye, you’re right, let’s leave this discussion as it is. Enjoy your evening!
