  • I really don’t understand where this hostility towards Linux comes from. It’s like people WANT to hate it.

Linux supports NVIDIA GPUs just fine. You can either use the open source drivers or one click install the NVIDIA drivers from the GUI software center.

I recently bought a pre-built gaming PC with an NVIDIA GPU.

    1. Install Fedora from USB
    2. Install proprietary drivers from Software Center (GUI)
    3. Install Steam from software center
    4. Install a windows only game (Proton is configured automatically)
    5. Play game

Notice that none of these steps involved any googling or frustration.

You don’t need local computer stores if you get stuck. Just find a forum or chat room with a bunch of nerds and ask for help.

Sure some Linux users are elitists but most of us are just trying to build a better world out here.

I’m also a SWE and pretty old. I also spend time outside hiking and rock climbing.

I run Linux on all my machines aside from a couple macs but Linux is my daily driver.

It doesn’t have to be a hobby.

Its been like 5+ years since I’ve run into a major problem that couldn’t be resolved quickly. I have much more serious problems trying to use windows at this point.

If it’s not a skill issue, it’s a mindset issue.

To me, using an OS that isn’t hostile and actively making itself worse for profit is worth the time investment.

It helps a lot to use popular, well supported distros like Mint or Fedora but even on Arch basically every problem I have is my own fault for breaking something.

  • IDK I think Wayland will be great some day. But right now we’re between x11 and Wayland an both options suck.

I’m just over here trying to record my desktop and take screenshots haha.

“it does not do that on purpose for security reasons”.

I understand the motivations here but my priorities do not align with this. Not once in my life has someone recorded my desktop without my permission. I support the idea of having a secure environment but its just a pretty bad UX in the meantime.

Dont take this the wrong way. I think Wayland is a good idea in general. I just wish there was something else to hold us over in the meantime and x11 isnt really that.

  • I build cross platform desktop software professionally.

Because of this I have to use and pretty deeply understand the inner workings of every OS.

I can state as absolute fact that every major operating system including Linux is an absolute pile of hot garbage.

The difference is that macOS and windows are garbage on purpose. There were deliberate decisions to enshitify them for profit. They spent time and money making the OS worse on purpose.

On Linux most of the shitty parts were designed with good intentions but just kinda suck (Wayland for example).
