I’d say he looks like a live-action version of Beaker from the Muppets, but I would never slander Beaker like that.

4·2 days agoWho’s to say they didn’t though? With the possible exception of not checking the IT company’s financial health (and maybe they did but decided it wasn’t a risk), the process worked as intended. They outsourced their storage and backups. The data is still stored and backed up. They were able to follow a remediation protocol (ie speaking to the judge) to regain access.
Having just dropped a kid off at college, I will tell you: the platitudes you’ve heard from others the whole time you’ve been a parent are all correct. It DOES go fast. They ARE the best times. You WILL look back on them fondly.

13·2 days agoHaving worked with huge, slow organizations before, they probably had a mandate in place to outsource this kind of thing, and nobody in-house to evaluate the solution, so they picked an “expert” company who then went out of business.

21·4 days agoYeah that’s what I’m saying. Even if you’re not using one of the big providers there’s a good chance they’re going to be at least handing it on its way to your self-hosted inbox, and its contents are unencrypted while they’re handling it (unless you encrypt the contents yourself). So there’s not much benefit to self hosting email if your goal is to keep your data out of big tech’s hands (and if that is your goal, don’t send anything important with email)

5·4 days agoI might be out of the loop on how email works, but doesn’t it hop between several other email servers on its way from Alice to Bob (and at least some of it must still be unencrypted)? If so and given google’s scale you could probably just assume that even if they’re not your inbox they’re going to be at least handling many if not most emails along the way.
I will be using “tendentious hellscape” in all of my meeting notes going forward. Thank you.
Sure, but I have to imagine it was written with currently-alive kids in mind, not the not-yet-conceived. Now get off my lawn.
E.T. came out in 1982. The oldest millennials would have been 2 years old. It’s a Gen-X movie. The rest of the text holds up tho.

27·3 months agoI always wondered how they made pants that do this. Normally if you stretch material across two points it flattens across the span. Is this material just so thin that it doesn’t? Do they put a seam or darts in to intentionally pull it into the crack?
